Adult Formation,
What is Adult Formation?

The word “formation” means “the process of taking shape.” The shape we are all attempting to take on is that of Jesus Christ Himself.

Adult Formation is about the process of growing into our faith while allowing room for Christ Himself to grow inside of us. When we stop growing spiritually, we run out of room for Christ. Formation is hard work that never really has an end.

It seems that way, anyway. In reality, we only do half of the work of formation. God does the rest. Still, our work is hard. Sure, God parted the Red Sea, but Moses had to get the Israelites through the desert and to the Sea’s shore.

And let’s be honest. Moses had the harder job because Moses is Moses and God is God.

As an adult, spiritual formation is about doing some hard work so that God can do some amazing work. It’s about taking the initiative, moving through our deserts, and then standing back and expecting that miracle.

Because miracles always come to those who work, watch and wait.

That’s what Adult Formation is all about: working on ourselves, watching for chances to grow and waiting for God to make us into something miraculous.

Adult Faith Formation

The mission of the Adult Faith Formation program at St. Peter is to form Catholic Christians into a community of critically self-reflecting, mature disciples who know and practice their faith deeply and to equip them for service to God and their neighbor. To accomplish this, our parish offers and/or promotes various programs throughout the year to increase one’s knowledge of our Christian, Catholic faith and to encourage one to grow in love for and service to others for the love of God. Programs are announced throughout the year in our bulletin.

Service

We must love and serve the Lord by always loving and serving one another. Our parish wants to help the faithful discern their gifts for service and help them engage in their own, individual ministry. Our Volunteer Coordinator can assist you in discovering where your gifts, skills and talents can be utilized to serve God. Not sure what your gifts are? We can assist you with this discernment as well.

If you feel you would like a personal interview to dialogue about your call to serve, call Rama Canney (630-232-0124 x.104).

Spiritual and Personal Development

St. Ignatius Loyola, and other saints too, believed that we need to really know ourselves deeply. In this way we can get an inkling of how God sees us. With an authentic view of our self and our acceptance of God’s grace, we can experience, over time, a transformation of will, attitude and character. We begin to want for ourselves and others what God wants. This is the way we restore our soul back to the image and likeness of God and is the work of our life. Watch the bulletin for spiritual and personal development topics.

Returning Catholics
We warmly welcome those who have been away from the Church but feel they would like to return. Even if you have been away from the Church for years, or if you have issues with the Church because of some personal experience, we want to help you. God always welcomes us home.

Call the parish center (630-232-0124) and we will provide you with a mentor to answer your questions and help you reconnect with the Catholic faith and traditions.

Becoming Catholic
Becoming Catholic—Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.) Part of Adult Faith Formation’s role is to help people discern a call to become Catholic through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Communion). R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is also for baptized Catholics who have not received the other sacraments of initiation (Communion and/or Confirmation).

For additional detail, click RCIA / Becoming Catholic Anyone with questions about becoming Catholic or Adult Confirmation should call Greg D’Anna (630-232-0124 x. 110).

Volunteer

Don’t we sound like fun?

Well, we are! If you would like to join the Adult Formation Team, we’d love to have you. Training for all volunteers is provided. We will only send you where you’re comfortable serving. If you would like to volunteer, first please say this discernment prayer and then quietly listen for God to speak to you. It may just feel like an excitement about a particular event, or a sense of peace about a decision. He often speaks to us in a still, quiet voice.

Dearest Lord, please show me how I may best serve your will, not only by serving others, but also by being fully myself in everything I do. Teach me who I am so that I might be that person for others. Amen.

Adult Formation is always looking for people to help during retreats, classes, fellowship events, speaker events, with the library, with childcare, with technology and a myriad of other areas.

Look through our pages and see if anything strikes you. If you’d like to be involved and are unsure of where you fit in, call Rama Canney, 630-232-0124 x 105 to schedule a discernment interview. We’ll talk about your interests and abilities and try to find a good match for you.

All you need is a love of God, a sense of humor and a willingness to try new things. We’ll help with the rest.
