A Fox Valley tradition, the Barn Sale has been hosted by Catholic parishes for the last 30+ years. Parishes have traditionally run the sale for 10 years at a time. This marks St. Peter's fourth year (in our second turn at a decade) at hosting the event. This two-day gigantic "garage sale" will be held at the Kane County Fair Grounds the third weekend of September (September 18 & 19, 2010). From January through the sale, volunteers are needed to collect, sort and box "merchandise" donated from members of the community at a designated warehouse (Campana Building, corner of Fabyan Pkwy and Route 31). The warehouse accepts donations from 8:30 a.m. through Noon the third Saturday of the month from January through April and every Saturday from May, through part or all of August, depending on the capacity of the warehouse.
The mission of the Barn Sale is three-fold. 1) Charity - many members of the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas rely on the sale each year to provide items for their homes that they would otherwise not be able to acquire. The Barn Sale is a chance to recycle usable items that are no longer needed by current owners. In addition, items remaining after the sale are donated to local charities to help in their mission. 2) Debt reduction - proceeds from the sale will help pay down the parish debt. 3) Community Building - the Barn Sale is a chance for parishioners to meet one another and work side-by-side toward a common goal. Speak to anyone in the parish who has participated in past Barn Sales, and they will tell you how wonderful it is to finally put names to the faces of all those people at Sunday Mass. The sale requires over 1,000 volunteers!

Purchasing gift certificates through St. Peter's PEACE (Parish Economic Alternative for Catholic Education) program is a great way to pay for your everyday shopping and help raise additional funds for the parish at the same time.
PEACE certificates work the same as cash at more than 100 of your favorite local and national merchants. You buy the certificates at face value and the merchant donates a percentage back to the parish. By using the certificates to purchase your groceries, gas, clothing and even dining out, you can help promote businesses in our community and earn credits that can be used to reduce your school tuition or to benefit other parish programs. You can review a list of retailers at www.shopwithscrip.com or ask for a list at the school, parish center or after weekend Masses.
The best part is that you, the purchaser, can choose where those funds will go. You can choose religious education, parish-wide educational enhancements, youth ministry, St. Peter Food Pantry, facilities expansion debt or the St. Peter Emergency Assistance Fund that assists those in need in our parish. St. Peter School families can choose to earn tuition credits or credits for other parish funds. A family of four that regularly uses the PEACE program can earn $600 or more in tuition credit per school year.
Certificates are available for purchase on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the school hallway. Most certificates are available for immediate pick-up. If certificates are not immediately available, they will be ready for pick-up the following Monday night or after Mass on the weekends.
School families may also choose to participate in the convenient "Red Bag" program. Families receive an order form for the week in a special Red Bag, then return their completed order form and check on Mondays with their child. Volunteers process the orders and certificates are sent home with the child on Fridays along with a new order form for the following week.
You can order PEACE certificates on-line and pay with a debit card or send a check to the parish center. Certificates can be picked up after specific weekend Masses for non- St. Peter school families. St. Peter School families will receive their certificates in the RED BAG. To become an on-line member please send an email to peace@stpetergeneva or call one of the contacts below. You will be sent the information needed to register.
