The Stations of the Cross

The stations of the cross hung in the original church on James Street. They were donated to St. Peter Church in the early 1940s by the late Mary Wheeler, a founding member of the parish.

The paints were restored professionally and placed in the new church in 1994. The restoration artist from the Art Institute of Chicago said that the paintings were probably of the 19th century French or German school of painting.

Each station is done on a copper plate with a rather dramatic style of painting--the flat background enhancing the action. The figures emerge as sensitive portrayals of the suffering and death of Jesus.

The paintings were framed and installed by parishioner Ray Jeskie.
